Kurt Kitayama picked up his first PGA Tour win at the age of 30, the Arnold Palmer Invitational. It was a very prestigious victory, as he achieved it after going into the final two holes at -8 with two of the greats of the sport in Rory McIllroy and Scottie Scheffler, who also risked an attack on No. 1 Jon Rahm. A phenomenal birdie on the 17th gave Kitayama victory, who could have rounded it off with another on the 18th if it weren’t for the fact that his top putt was inches from going in.
Kitayama, at -9, edged McIlroy and English by one stroke and Scheffler by two, who bogeyed 18. Rahm finished 39th at +1.
McIlroy needed to win to reach No. 1, while Scheffler was second, but alone. If he fails to do so, Jon Rahm remains at the top of the world rankings for another week.
