From the dream of the heptathlon medal for Simon Ehammer (23). At the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, he crossed three times in the long jump – conceding a clean sheet. And that’s all over after the second discipline. The long jump would become Ehammer’s parade discipline: at last year’s World Championships he won bronze in this discipline among the specialists.
The day actually started very well. Over 60 metres, the Appenzeller won his run in 6.80 seconds, just 8 hundredths off his personal best. Ehammer even topped the heptathlon standings.
Expectations for precious metals were high. Last year he became vice world indoor champion. In the summer he then doubled at the European Championships with decathlon silver.
The disappointment is of course great. “I’m a bit clueless at the moment, it’s frustrating. I’m having a lot of trouble getting going this season,” he told SRF. (SME)
