For Wawrinka, Federer is no longer the greatest

Roger Federer (left) and Stan Wawrinka won Olympic gold together in 2008…

So who is the greatest tennis player of all time? Federer, Nadal or Djokovic? That’s where the minds divide. Same with Stan Wawrinka, but he has an answer ready.

“When it comes to sheer results and wins, Novak will be ahead of the other two,” the 37-year-old said on RMC’s “Super Moscato Show” podcast. In 2017, he said in an interview with the Tagesanzeiger: “Roger is the greatest of all time.”

He puts into perspective that they are “different personalities and players” and that everyone has their advantages. “When we talk about the game, Federer has the talent, the ease and the feeling. Nadal has the power and the power and Djokovic is a bit of perfection.” Still, Wawrinka thinks: “Novak is the best player at the moment.”

“Curse and Blessing”

He has proven that over the past 20 years. His 22nd Grand Slam title, won just over a month ago in Melbourne, is the latest example of his incredible success.

What he and his two arch-rivals have done for the sport is incredible. Many tennis records belong to one of the three, and each has shaped the sport in their own way over the past two decades, says Wawrinka. Having everyone play at the same time was both a “curse and a blessing” – for themselves, but also for the rest of the league.

Wawrinka knows what he’s talking about. He played a total of 74 games against the star trio. His records: 6:20 against Djokovic, 3:19 against Nadal, 3:23 against Federer. He is undoubtedly one of the top players unlucky enough to be active in the same era. “There were many generations that bit the three.”

Is there a changing of the guard?

Still, the three-time Grand Slam winner believes that the time of dominance is slowly but surely coming to an end: “I believe that the generation that is coming now will gradually gain the upper hand.” The current number 97 in the world probably thinks of players like Carlos Alcaraz (19), Casper Ruud (24) or Jannik Sinner (21).

That the changing of the guard will ever happen is “inevitable”. But even the wild youngsters can’t shake the trio’s legendary status. Because: “We’re not just talking about great players. We’re talking about the greatest players in the history of the sport.” (che)
