SCB and DiDomenico break up early

Chris DiDomenico will leave Bern at the end of the season.

It is a clap of thunder that fell over Bern. SCB top scorer Chris DiDomenico and the capital club part ways after just one year and despite a contract that is still valid for one season at the end of the season.

Last summer, DiDomenico was SCB’s most important new addition. At rival Fribourg, the Canadian striker had a 54-point season behind him. Gottéron coach and head of sports Christian Dubé would have liked to keep the unconventional striker, as he always stressed, but made a lower offer than SCB.

After a chaotic season that ended in 11th place, the Bernese decided to rebuild. They brought in the Canadian goalscorer to turn things around. The emotional “DiDo” seemed the perfect player to wake the hats from a deep sleep and inspire and entertain the fans, which is especially important for the Bernese business model.

DiDomenico undermines the coach’s authority

Since SCB also signed stars such as Romain Loeffel, Sven Bärtschi and Joel Vermin, everyone in Bern hoped that the new SCB would finally be good for a carefree season. But the opposite is the case.

Although DiDomenico’s offensive production remained high at the new club. He should get a similar number of points as in Friborg. But integration was difficult. Like coach Johan Lundskog, who was fired in November, his successor Toni Söderholm has difficulty disciplining the Canadian. DiDomenico is a tactical free spirit and tends to expand his missions on his own. He sometimes catches his breath during the backchecking phase and then has no air again until the SCB attacks.

DiDomenico’s lack of discipline caused unrest in the team and in the surrounding area, especially as talks failed to produce any improvement and the 34-year-old undermined the coach’s authority.

Rumors of a possible divorce have been circulating in the PostFinance Arena for some time now. However, everything has accelerated in recent days. According to information provided by Blick, both parties agreed to part ways at the end of the season and terminate the contract early. However, given the current battle for a spot in the pre-playoffs, they wanted to keep this a secret.
