Zyla defends world title on the regular hill

Piotr Zyla wins the world title on the normal hill in Planica. The Pole wins ahead of the Germans Andreas Wellinger and Karl Geiger.

Zyla successfully defends the title of Oberstdorf 2021. This happens surprisingly: on the one hand he was not among the favorites, on the other hand he seems to have already been dethroned after round one with a 13th intermediate place. With the hill record distance of 105 m, the 36-year-old takes the lead and – partly thanks to a bit of luck with the wind – can no longer be pushed out of the leader’s block.

Old master Ammann surprised

Gregor Deschwanden and Simon Ammann show respectable performances. Deschbanden (19th place) jumped as expected, Simon Ammann finished better than expected in 28th place. Killian Peier (33rd) and Remo Imhof (35th) miss the last round by a few points.

Deschwanden shows two good jumps with 97.5 m and 93.5 m. Given the failed season so far, he has to be satisfied with this ranking. Ammann has more bad luck with the wind in the back than Deschwanden in the second round. At 97.5 m, the 41-year-old follows 87 m. Even in the best times of his career, the veteran had to accept penalties for landing. In Planica, this is now the veteran’s weakness. The Toggenburger cannot conjure telemark landings on slopes.
