The euphoria was great. Switzerland qualified in a difficult group for the knockout phase at the World Cup in Qatar. But the round of 16 against Portugal did not go as planned. Our Nati is sent home with a 1:6 package. In an interview with the “NZZ”, Fabian Schär talks about the bitter end and what role his state of health played in it.
“We have to succeed in things that are not obvious. With the slap in the face against Portugal, the opposite was the case: we didn’t succeed,” the defender recalls. The departure could not come soon enough after the painful defeat. “I just wanted to leave. I had no more thoughts and I didn’t feel like playing football at all for a few days. The defeat was hard to accept.”
Schär’s participation in the round of 16 was at stake for a long time. The 31-year-old man was in poor health. “I had a high fever for three days, I felt like I was dead. In hindsight, it would have been smarter to say: ‘It doesn’t work,’» he admits.
But on match day, Schär felt better and wanted to play at all costs. “I thought it could work. You have to understand: it was the World Cup round of 16! No player wants to miss that, any footballer would have behaved like me.”
He would regret the decision shortly after the game kicked off. “I could barely move. I felt worse than ever in my career. After 15 minutes I noticed I was at my performance limit. I somehow fought through it but nothing worked at half time.”
The World Cup is now in the past. Schär is having a strong season at his club Newcastle United. They are currently fifth in the Premier League. On Sunday, the “Magpies” have a chance to win their first title in 68 years in the League Cup final against Manchester United.
The defender also has big plans for the Swiss national team. The European championships will take place in Germany in a year and a half. “I want to write a story with the national team at a tournament like Morocco did at the last World Cup.” The North Africans have reached the semi-finals in Qatar in a sensational way.
