“There are such stupid rules in tennis”

Nick Kyrgios considers himself an unprofessional athlete.

Nick Kyrgios (27) is still recovering from his knee injury that saw him miss the Australian Open – and he has plenty of time to reflect on the tennis circus and himself.

Last year’s Wimbledon finalist has now commented on the ATP and his behavior in a podcast. The 27-year-old is angry about the rules of conduct in tennis: “There are such stupid rules in tennis that if you make a wrong statement once, you will be fined and branded. I am Ordinary myself and that leads then sometimes stop for consultation with the referees. I don’t feel like I’m bolder than others. I’m just expressing myself.”

He also feels used by the tournaments, after all, thanks to him and his controversies, many more people would come to watch.

“I can win a Grand Slam”

At Wimbledon, the number 21 in the world reached a Grand Slam final for the first time and narrowly lost to Novak Djokovic. “It was really my chance. If I had won, I would have retired for 1-2 years.” But Kyrgios is still convinced that he can win a Grand Slam. He already did that in doubles at the Australian Open 2022.

He describes tennis as a tough sport because you have to learn to live with defeat. The Australian says of himself that he is “probably the most unprofessional tennis player in the world”: “I never warm up, I don’t have a coach. I haven’t known anything else since I was seven.” (nsa)
