The new Bayern star talks about a brutal attack

Joao Cancelo (28) has been playing for Bayern Munich since January. Before that, the technically adept full-back spent three and a half years in Manchester and experienced traumatic things.

In an interview with “O Jogo”, he shares a story that has shaped him to this day. A scar above his right eye will always remind him of New Year’s Eve 2021.

What happened? Cancelo was about to finish the year at home with his family – mother, daughter, father and uncle – and a friend when four burglars broke into his home and threatened him and his family.

The then-City star wanted to push back an attacker, took a blow: “This is where I will be scarred for the rest of my life. It was mainly the feeling of powerlessness. Because I would be my face for my club – imagine what I would do for my family, which is the most important thing in my life.”

Back in action a day later: ‘Football is my life’

The next day, Cancelo played a top match in London against Arsenal with Man City. “I must confess that I didn’t feel well enough to play,” Cancelo reflects, explaining why he played anyway: “It felt like a defeat that they could discourage and upset me so much. I wanted to play because it was my life is and I would give my face to those who gave me everything. In this case City.”

While Cancelo traveled to London with his team, his family stayed home. The club sent security and even fellow Nati player Bruno Fernandes, who plays for rivals Man United, dropped by to be with Cancelo’s family.
