The Netherlands suddenly have two short track eaters: Schulting and ‘Xandra de Grote’

The Netherlands suddenly have two short track eaters: Schulting and ‘Xandra de Grote’

Suzanne Schulting and Xandra Velzeboer were home again for the final day of World Cup competition in Montreal, Canada. After her victory over 1,500 meters on Saturday, Schulting drove safely to victory in the second 1,000 meters of this World Cup weekend.

And Velzeboer, who won the first 1,000 meters on Saturday, was impressively the best in the 500 meters. Schulting and Velzeboer did not compete this weekend but will compete in the 3,000m relay tonight.

Velzeboer drives Rekord Schulting off the books

Velzeboer, world champion in the 500-meter dash at the same distance last year in Montreal, was already on a lonely level in her quarterfinals and semifinals. In the final she competed against the strong Pole Natalia Maliszewska, home driver Danae Blais and two Koreans, Shim Suk-hee and Seo Whihim.

Lightning start and she’s gone: Xandra Velzeboer with great force majeure to victory over 500 meters

They also had no answer to the Dutchman’s rocket start: After the first corner, Velzeboer took the lead and then only drove further away from the competition. With that, she also beat Schulting’s Dutch record from the books: 42,123. Maliszewska was second in almost a second (!) and Shim was third.

Michelle Velzeboer, Xandra’s younger sister, finished third in her semifinals, narrowly missing out on victory in the B finals and finishing seventh.

Xandra Velzeboer is congratulated by national coach Niels Kerstholt and her sister Michelle.

For Schulting, this first World Cup weekend was also the revenge stage, because last year she had to drop out shortly before the World Cup due to a corona infection.

Schulting stays ahead of three Koreans

She has this revenge, double and direct. After her victory over 1,500 meters on Saturday, Schulting confidently qualified for her 70th international final (World Cup, European Championships, World Cup and Olympic Games).

In it she once again met her eternal rival Choi Min-yeong, who with 25 World Cup wins still has 8 more than Schulting. Choi could also count on two compatriots in the final.

Schulting remains ahead of three Koreans and also wins 1.00 meters in the World Cup

With three laps to go, Schulting viciously slipped into Choi and she was never caught no matter what the three Koreans behind her tried. Choi was second, Gilli Kim (second on Saturday behind Schulting over 1,500 meters) third.

Yara van Kerkhof and Selma Poutsma were killed in the quarterfinals.

Canadians Dubois and Dion bring the audience to the benches

The men’s 500 and 1,000 meters were won by Canadians. Canadian Steven Dubois brought the spectators to the bench with a victory over 500 meters. South Korea’s Lee June-seo was second, Italy’s Pietro Sighel third.

Teun Boer won the B final over 500 meters and finished sixth. Jens van ‘t Woud and Kay Huisman both died in the quarterfinals of the 500 meters.

Pascal Dion followed the example of his compatriot by winning the 1,000 meters. He crossed the finish line first, no doubt, but second and third place were up for debate. Silver went to Korea’s Hong Kyung-hwan and Kim Tae-sung.

Friso Emons was ninth. This is his second top ten result this weekend. Sjinkie Knegt had to fight for position in a strong quarter-final, appeared to be successful but lost his second place in the final corner. Bram Steenaart went down in the 1,000m rematches earlier in the day.
