Short track racer Suzanne Schulting has made an excellent start to the World Cup season. In Montreal, she won the 1,500m final decisively behind Choi Min-yeong. No Dutch podium finishes followed in the men’s 1,500 meters.
Schulting had won her quarter-finals and her semi-finals with ease. In the final, with three laps to go, she rumbled over Canada’s Claudia Gagnon and Choi (triple world champion at that distance) before finding a gap that no one could close.
For Schulting it was the eighteenth World Cup victory. Choi stayed at 25.
Friso Emons made a strong impression in the men’s 1,500m final, but was unable to keep up with his competitors in the final rounds and finished fourth. Park Ji-Won was the fastest, followed by Canadian Steven Dubois and fellow South Korean Hong Kyung Hwan.
Sjinkie Knegt waited a long time and waited for his chance but could not prevail. He therefore didn’t really play a significant role in the final and finished fifth.
Of the Dutch short track players, only Schuting made it into the final. Rianne de Vries qualified for the B final. De Vries took the reins early and led several laps. But then she was up and the best part came in the closing stages.
She dropped back just before the finish: Kim Geon-Hee, Courtney Sarault and Gong Li overtook De Vries. She placed eleventh in the 1,500 meters.
Bram Steenaart rode the men’s B final. He was soon pushed back by his competitors and could not escape.
In the mixed relay, the Dutch team was on course for victory. Six laps before the end, Xandra Velzeboer handed Suzanne Schulting over, who was initially able to hold the lead.
But shortly after the substitution things went wrong. Schulting slipped so that the chances of a medal for the Netherlands, who competed alongside Schulting and Velzeboer with Sjinkie Knegt and Jens van ‘t Wout, disappeared in one fell swoop.
It was a repetition of the scenario that played out during the Beijing Olympics. During that tournament last February, things went wrong for Orange in the semi-finals. In this race, Schulting was boarding after half a minute.
