Nienke Brinkman remains successful. The athlete secured overall victory in the Golden Trail World Series on Saturday on the Portuguese island of Madeira. The 29-year-old endurance specialist won the fourth of the five races that make up the finale of the series. Trail running is running on unpaved and often difficult paths, mostly in mountainous areas.
That summer, Brinkman became the first Dutch athlete to win a medal in the marathon at the European Athletics Championships. She won bronze at the 42.195-kilometer race in Munich.
That spring, she improved Lornah Kiplagat’s Dutch record in the Rotterdam Marathon, setting it to 2:22:51.
The former ice hockey star, who lives and works in Switzerland, combines road running with trail running. Brinkman is one of the best in the world in this discipline. She has already won three “classics” this year, the Zegama (Spain), the Pikes Peak Ascent (US) and Flagstaff Sky Peaks (US).
The final in Madeira consists of five races in five days. The total distance is 105 kilometers.
