The United Cup benefits from the growing popularity of tennis team tournaments

International tennis is enriched by another team tournament. From the 2023 season, the United Cup will be organized in Australia, a tournament for men and women involving eighteen countries.

An initiative of the tennis associations ATP, WTA and the Australian Tennis Federation, the United Cup appears to be a response to the growing popularity of team events in global tennis.

The Davis Cup (men) and the Billie Jean King Cup (women, formerly the Fed Cup) have been played for many years, but the Laver Cup (Europe vs. the World) has also become a fixture on the tennis calendar.

The All American Cup will also be held in San Antonio (Texas) for the first time on November 11, 12 and 13. This is a three-day gathering of the best East and West Coast American tennis players modeled on the Laver Cup.

The United Cup replaces the ATP Cup on the tennis calendar, the men’s national tournament that has been organized in Australia for the past three years. An important aspect for the participants: In this tournament, the players can collect points for the world rankings.

Hopman Cup

The United Cup shares similarities with the Hopman Cup. This tournament for women and men was held in Perth between 1989 and 2019, but did not count towards the world rankings. The last winner was Switzerland with Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic.

This last edition also made for a nice get-together in mixed doubles between the USA with Serena Williams and Switzerland with Federer.

The Netherlands reached the final at this tournament in 2006. At that time, the oranges lost the final of the USA with Peter Wessels and Michaëlla Krajicek.

The United Cup starts with six groups from three countries. The three venues Brisbane, Perth and Sydney each accommodate two groups. The group winners then play a final against each other for each location.

The three remaining countries and the top loser of the three finals then qualify for the semi-finals, which continue in a knockout format in Sydney (6-8 January).

The United Cup will be played from Thursday 29th December to Sunday 8th January in preparation for the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam tournament of the year begins on January 16 in Melbourne.
