The Red Bull Formula 1 team has been reprimanded by the international automobile association FIA for exceeding the budget limit in 2021.

The FIA ​​fined the team of two-time world champion Max Verstappen $7 million (more than €7 million). In addition, the racing team is allowed to spend 10 percent less time in the wind tunnel in the run-up to the next season.

After the submission of all financial data by Red Bull, the FIA ​​​​concludes that the team has exceeded the cap in 2021 (more than 145 million euros) by around 2.2 million euros. In the eyes of the FIA ​​​​this is a small excess of less than five percent, which is reasonable for a fine. Points may be deducted if the limit is exceeded.

The FIA ​​​​and Red Bull have discussed what punishment should follow at length over the past few weeks. The team eventually agreed with the FIA’s calculations.

Exceeding the budget limit led to considerable anger among the competition from Red Bull. Competing teams, led by Mercedes, called on the FIA ​​​​to take strict action against Verstappen’s team. A mild penalty could lead to other teams disregarding the budget limit and also accepting a fine, the argument goes.

According to Red Bull, the overrun was minimal and the affair was blasted.
