The Swiss curlers want a medal at the World Cup at home in Schaffhausen – they desperately need a win on Easter Monday after two defeats against the Netherlands last weekend. The Dutch team is not a force in curling and that is why national coach Thomas Lips even demands from SRF before the match: “We have to ‘let them down’ today!”
But then that: In the sold-out curling temple of Schaffhausen, Skip Yannick Schwaller’s team achieved their second round-robin victory with 8:5. But instead of the hoped-for dismantling of the Dutch, who lost 1:8 to Sweden and 4:9 to Germany, it is more of a victory. “We always had it under control, I was never afraid today,” Schwaller tells Blick. “In the third end we had the chance to make it 5-1, then it would have been over early.”
But the 5th ending in particular goes wrong. Benoit Schwarz-van Berkel’s last Swiss stone went wrong – the Dutch around Skip Wouter Gösgens (25) took the opportunity and wrote three stones in one go, which meant a lead of 5:4. Schwaller: “That was a gift for her. But we showed character and didn’t let the momentum change. We remained confident.”
But even in the 6th end, a stone from Sven Michel does not end up where it should. Rider Pablo Lachat-Couchepin is pure frustration, throwing away his hands and using his broom to suggest an attack on the gang.
But then the Swiss lightning recovery. The loud fans are happy. The Swiss correct the intermediate low and take the lead again thanks to a two-man house. And in the 7th and 8th ends they placed the lid on it with one stolen stone each. Schwaller is happy: “We have been playing excellently at this World Cup so far, we just have to keep it up!”
