The new price monitor of organic products compared to conventional products will be published only on Tuesday. The Sunday press has already published the first findings on this issue. Price research conducted by the University of Applied Sciences of Northwest Switzerland with the participation of the Fair Markets Switzerland Association shows the following: Organic products are much cheaper in discount stores such as Aldi and Lidl than in Migros and Coop. “SonntagsZeitung” understands, based on available figures, that not only foreign organic products, but also milk, yoghurt, eggs and carrots from Swiss organic producers are sold in discount stores at much lower prices than those of industry giants.
Also noteworthy: Compared to last year’s first survey, most of the products examined did not become cheaper. Prices of traditional goods have fallen recently at major distributors in some cases. According to the analysis, the price gap between conventional and organic products persists and has even increased. Organic sales are stagnating. This is probably because people can spend less and less money (keyword: inflation).
The Rindsplätzli example is clearly extreme: in discount stores they are a quarter times cheaper. However: Only Lidl organic beef patties were included in the study. At the time of the research, a similar product was not available at Aldi. Large distributors justify themselves in the report by saying that in addition to Bio Suisse they meet the Natura Beef standard (Coop) or offer Bud quality and greater availability (Migros).
Additionally, Migros and Coop offer discounts on organic products that discounters do not. Organic meat may be sold on the counters at the same price as the promotional price of large distributors, or even cheaper.
“SonntagsZeitung” writes that, in general, the reason for the different organic prices in discount stores and large retailers lies primarily in the size of the relatively small range of organic products in discount stores. Migros and Coop offer many more organic products than Aldi, Lidl and Denner. Discounters can therefore calculate more efficiently. (euro)
