Jannik Sinner confirmed his status as the best tennis player of the moment at the ATP 1000 tournament in Miami.
The 22-year-old Australian Open winner defeated Bulgarian veteran Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 12) 6:3, 6:1 in the final and is now ahead of only Novak Djokovic in the world rankings.
Two days after the show of power against Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals (6:1, 6:2), Sinner hardly gives the strengthened Dimitrov any chances. After 1:13 hours, the South Tyrolean used his first match point with a backhand winner for his 2nd victory at the Masters 1000 and 13th tournament victory at professional level.
It is, two weeks after the semi-final defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells, Sinner’s 24th win in the 25th match of the season. The former Italian young champion as a ski racer will thus improve in the world rankings from 3rd to 2nd place at the expense of the Spaniard – he has never been ranked so well. Djokovic, who will have to defend the points for the titles at the French Open and the US Open in the coming months, is only just over 1,000 points ahead of him.
For his part, 32-year-old Dimitrov, thanks to his third last appearance in 2024, will be in the world’s top 10 at ninth place from next week for the first time since 2018. (SDA)
