About fifteen minutes before the end, Norwegian super striker Erling Braut Haaland (23) appears for the first and what feels like the only time in the top match of the Premier League (0-0) in Arsenal’s penalty area. After a City corner, Haaland stands blank in front of the goal, but clumsily trips over the ball.
City fans are happy to forgive such an unfortunate move for a man who took the top goalscoring crown in his first Premier League season and has already scored 18 league goals in 29 games this season. For Sky expert Roy Keane (52) it results in harsh criticism.
Keane, ex-City professional Micah Richards and former Arsenal player Theo Walcott discuss the mediocre top game in the Sky Studio after the match when Keane hits one: “Haaland is the best in the world in front of goal. But overall the level of his play is poor and weak. Not just today, all the time. Almost a player from the second division.”
The Man Utd legend is surprised by his statement and seems to immediately realize he has exaggerated something. Keane puts it into perspective: “He is a brilliant striker, but he needs to improve his game.”
The Irishman is not alone in his criticism. He is well received by fellow expert Micah Richards. Richards, who played for City for a long time when he was active, also sharply criticizes Haaland: “They are technical errors. He doesn’t get involved in the City game. But he will improve that in the coming years.”
The fact that Nati star Manuel Akanji’s teammate is also discussing a crisis in form is almost grotesque considering his goal percentage. The Norwegian is goalless in five games, but still leads the Premier League top scorers list this season with 18 goals, ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (16 goals).
Haaland did not comment on the two critics’ statements after the match. It is quite possible that he will respond to the criticism with goals. The opportunity to do so will come next Wednesday in the league match against Aston Villa (9:15 p.m.). (par)
