Against world champions Denmark: National handball team escapes blow at Schmid’s premiere

The Swiss handball players lost the test match in Denmark when Andy Schmid made his debut as national coach. There was a 25:30 defeat against the world champion and European Championship finalist. The best Swiss goal scorer was lineman Lucas Meister with four goals.

The Swiss – led by the strong Nikola Portner in goal – achieved cosmetic results towards the end of the match. At halftime it looked like a defeat at 9:17 am. The match in Aarhus served as Switzerland’s only test match ahead of the World Cup play-offs against Slovenia on May 9 and 12.

Despite the defeat, Schmid is satisfied with his first week as national coach: “For me personally it was a highlight. I was very relaxed before the match. I wanted to help from the sidelines, but in certain situations you are powerless, I still have to get used to that.”

Schmid: “I made two rookie mistakes”

Schmid saw room for improvement: “I made two rookie mistakes. I often ran out of the coaching area and probably should have seen ten yellow cards, but thanks to my past in Denmark the delegates probably turned a blind eye. And after the match I forgot to thank Nikolaj Jacobsen. I’ve been hearing that for five years now (laughs).” Background: The Danish world champion coach Jacobsen was once Schmid’s coach during the championship years in Rhein-Neckar Löwen.
