The window gift: that is why Winterthur owes its enormous heights to the FCB

It is not the first return of Patrick Frame (54) to the Joggeli, but it is all the sweeter for it. While his former club Basel is battling relegation, the Winterthur coach and his team are in the middle of the race for the championship group. After only one defeat in the last eleven games, the Eulachstadt can even dream of Europe. Only Servette (22) scored more points this year than Winterthur (18).

The people of Zurich also have their rising opponents to thank for reaching soaring heights. Because FCB threw Frame out the door in February 2022, even though he scored an average of 2.11 points in 37 games as head coach. He is still the most successful Basel coach since Urs Fischer. The fact that Frame had to leave after a 3-1 win against Lausanne fits the picture. No wonder that FCB boss David Degen (41) later called the dismissal a mistake.

Frame coaches national U21 team during FCB crash

The separation of frames is the beginning of the historic FCB crash. Under his successor Guillermo Abascal (34), the Basel team finished the season in second place – 14 points behind champions FCZ. To date, it is the last time that FCB is in one of the top two places in the rankings.

While Frame will soon get a new job and the U21 national team prepares for the 2023 European Championship, the FCB coaches are taking the lead. Alex Frei (44) takes over from Abascal, followed by Heiko Vogel (48). FCB finished the 2022/2023 season in fifth place – worse than ever since the Super League was founded (2003).

Winterthur has the second best attack

Timo Schultz (46) also cannot wake Bebbi up; he also has to leave after eleven games. And after four defeats in a row without a single goal, interim coach Vogel is also gone. Successor Fabio Celestini eventually takes over FCB as the bottom of the table.

And framing? He will lead the national U21 team to the quarter-finals of the European Championship in the summer of 2023 and then hire him as Winterthur coach. Together with sports director Oliver Kaiser (44), he turned the former relegation candidate into a spectacular team within a few months. Only leader YB scores more goals than the supporting team.

There is only one downside in Frame’s rising flight with Winterthur: the two previous matches against FCB were lost – 2:5 and 1:3. If he manages to get his first win in the third attempt against his old club, the people in Basel will be even more annoyed by the dismissal than they already are.
