Surprise in the German selection: DFB coach Nagelsmann offers six newcomers

Without some long-standing pillars from Munich and Dortmund, but with the returnees Toni Kroos and Manuel Neuer and a new VfB block: national coach Julian Nagelsmann makes a radical change in the German football team of the European Championship exactly three months before the opening match, without take big names into account.

Six newcomers are in the 26-man squad for the international matches on March 23 in France and three days later against the Netherlands: Jan-Niklas Beste from Heidenheim, Aleksander Pavlovic from FC Bayern, Maximilian Beier from Hoffenheim and Waldemar Anton from Stuttgart, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Deniz Undav. Eleven players from the November selection were no longer counted, including stars such as Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hofmann. Leroy Sané is missing due to suspension.

The 2014 world champions Neuer (after more than fifteen months) and Kroos (after almost three years) are making their comeback. Frankfurt’s Robin Koch, like Kroos most recently at the 2021 European Championship, was also taken into account again in Nagelsmann’s search for more ‘workers’ and ‘defensive monsters’.

With five professionals around the veterans Neuer and Thomas Müller, FC Bayern still has the largest block. Nagelsmann nominated four players from the strikers from Stuttgart and three from leader Leverkusen. Niclas Füllkrug is the only Dortmund player in the selection. (AFP)
