Cédric Zesiger (M.) will be in the starting line-up for the first time against Leverkusen in the new year.

VfL Wolfsburg spent almost 75 million euros on new player material last summer. It didn’t work – the “Wolves” are stuck in 13th place, only seven points ahead of the relegation place. Not a single victory has been achieved in 2024.

Nati defender Cédric Zesiger (25) has largely watched the negative development of recent weeks from the reserve bench. The Seelander, who moved from Bern to VW City in the summer, had to give up his place in the defense to others. Last weekend the defensive edge returned to the starting line-up against Leverkusen for the first time in the new year and put in an impressive performance despite the 2-0 defeat.

Zesiger marched into the coach’s office

This puts Zesiger back in position for a more prominent role in the hot phase of the season. This is partly due to his attacking approach. As he reveals to “Kicker”, he marched alone to the trainer’s office and sought dialogue with trainer Niko Kovac.

“It’s been frustrating with the playing time the last few weeks,” Zesiger said. “I approached the coach and we had good conversations. You can always go to his office. I’m a player who likes to know where he stands.”

The conversations had an impact. As the ‘kicker’ thinks he knows, Zesiger will probably be reset for now. Partly thanks to his experience in the relegation battle. “I know this situation, I already had it in Switzerland with the Grasshoppers Zurich. I know what it takes to get out of there.” (sbe)
