When asked whether he would be concerned if he lost against St. Gallen on Saturday, only the rhetorical question followed. ‘What should I worry about? I am a fighter who never gives up.” GC coach Bruno Berner (46) does not want to know anything about a possible exit from the record champion.
At the media conference prior to the historic home match against St. Gallen, the Zurich resident was confident that the record champions can free themselves from the situation at the bottom of the table. Above all, last week’s performance against Winterthur gives him courage: “The team has the belief that things will turn out well. And I’m leading the way, because I believe that too.”
The atmosphere and the relationship with the new general manager Harald Gärtner, who has been with GC since Los Angeles FC took over the club in January, is excellent, Berner emphasizes: “I feel the confidence of the management from LA and Zurich. The collaboration with Harald Gärtner and Bernt Haas (sports director note) is very close. It is now about organizing the season together with them in such a way that we remain in the competition, but also to think now about what is needed in the summer.”
But what if the record champions no longer play in the Super League? Suddenly only the present counts: “Saturday. St. Gallen. To win. National break. To breathe. Next game. Point. ‘What if’ doesn’t interest me. “I am confident that GC will remain in the competition and that we have a great future,” said Berner.
“I had the knife on my neck in three of the four seasons at Kriens and in one season at Winti in the relegation battle, and we stayed in class every time. Now I do the same with GC.” In any case, this statistic must be given credit by the coach – in the season after his departure from Kriens, the team was relegated without a chance to the Promotion League. According to his own statement, he made his way with the Lucerne team in a professional league with amateurs.
He now has to prove that he is capable of turning things around with a limited team. Berner: “We started all over again this summer. We have some players with great prospects and potential, but still too few top players with the necessary consistency to win Super League matches on a regular basis. You have to see where we come from. We expected a season like this and still relied on a lot of youth.”
