Champions with their backs against the wall: Servette must win twice in Biel

Broken champions: Servette lost the play-in first leg against Biel 2:3.

When the last siren sounds, the sparsely occupied Les Vernets hall quickly empties. Servette just lost 3-2 to Biel in the last few minutes and has to win twice in the play-in second leg in Zealand on Saturday. First in regular playing time. And if that works, also in overtime.

If Geneva fail, they would be the fourth champions to miss the play-offs. SC Bern was affected in 2014 and 2020 and the ZSC Lions in 2019. As a consolation, Servette would at least continue to triumph in the Champions League.

“Now we know that our backs are really against the wall,” says Nati striker Marco Miranda (25) after the match. In such situations, Servette often managed to get the best out of herself. “We have had success in the past,” admits Jan Cadieux (43). “But on Saturday we have to show character. What happened is now behind us. Either we win or our season is over.”

“We are not desperate enough for the goal”

The master coach will have to find the right balance in his argument. “We have to have confidence and tell ourselves that we are capable of playing big games at the right time. But we should not say that everything will go well. Because that’s our problem: we’ve always said that everything will be fine when it counts.”

How do the people of Geneva want to turn the tide in Biel? “Be prepared from the start and stick to it for 60 minutes,” Cadieux answers. We are not in front of the goal enough. And if we do, we’re not desperate enough.”
