Bernhard Russi about Odermatt and Stenmark: There is much that separates the two ski gods

GOAT! ‘The greatest of all time’ is what is meant. – Not God! Although these exceptional talents seem a little divine to us here and there and every now and then. Comparable to the twelve most important gods from Greek mythology. These too were revered and admired and their skills hardly dared to be understood.

In our world they will always exist, the GOATS. They come and go. And we will always try to make comparisons. Pele, Maradona or Messi? Who was or is it?

It is obvious that in order to understand the achievements of our current snow god Marco Odermatt, we also look for comparisons with other high flyers. Statistically speaking, you cannot ignore the great Ingemar Stenmark. Although they have a lot in common, they are fundamentally completely different.

Silent Stenmark, communicator Odermatt

The obvious discipline is of course the giant slalom. Just like Odermatt today, Stenmark didn’t seem to slow down either. Both are near perfect and, the longer the series goes on, unbeatable. But while “Odi” has now mastered the art of the central position above the ski and can escape from even the most difficult situations, Ingemar was the master of the perfect transition turn. The quiet Swede was as predictable as a computer.

Our Swiss trump card, on the other hand, is closer to nature and people, with open, clear communication. He also occasionally gives free rein to his intuition and is willing to go to extremes.

Athletically, both are high flyers. Marco can do ski somersaults and flick-flack with a run-up. Ingemar still impresses today on his unicycle and jumps from a standing position onto the Swedish box.

However, we had to force Ingemar to attend the winning party. In 1977 in Sierra Nevada (Sp), when he was assured of his World Cup overalls, we stormed his room and woke him up with a double liter of red wine. Ingemar’s reaction? “Thank you, I couldn’t have done it alone!”

Marco is definitely a little different. Happy! Because not all gods were the same.
