Her opponent is enthusiastic: Gut-Behrami achieved this premiere with the victory in Kvitfjell

Lara Gut-Behrami holds up the winner’s trophy in Kvitfjell.

The weather almost ruins the game. Despite cloudy skies and poor visibility, the Super-G can be held in Kvitfjell (Nee). It was planned at short notice because departure after the canceled training sessions was not possible.

No problem for Lara Gut-Behrami (32). “The most important thing is that we can race,” she says into the SRF microphone. The speed drivers have often had bad luck this winter. The downhill is already the eighth race that could not go ahead.

Premiere at the 45th World Cup victory

The change in plan does not cause any problems for Gut-Behrami. She confidently drives to her eighth victory this winter, her third in the Super-G. She made up for the somewhat reserved start on the fat snow with a strong finish. And once again saves the honor of the Swiss women. No one else is in the top 20 except her.

At the same time, Gut-Behrami is premiering. She is already celebrating her 45th World Cup victory – and she has never before managed to win eight times in one winter. Not even in the 2015/16 season, when she won the overall World Cup. At the time, she topped the podium six times. Her most successful season to date was another season: in 2013/14 she won seven races.

“A pleasure for me”

“Lara is in top form and skis incredibly well,” praises Cornelia Hütter (31) in the SRF interview. The Austrian came second, twelve hundredths behind, and kept the tension high in the battle for the small crystal ball. Although Gut-Behrami now has a 25-point lead over her, the decision will probably only be made at the World Cup final. Unless she exceeds 100 points in the penultimate Super-G on Sunday.

Gut-Behrami, on the other hand, really gets away with it in the overall World Cup. With 1,514 points she has already collected almost as many as during her victory in 2015/16 with 1,522 points. Her lead over Mikaela Shiffrin (28) is now 305 points. The American is expected to make her comeback this weekend and – although she has already written off the big ball – mathematically she still has a chance of winning it.

That’s why Gut-Behrami doesn’t bother with math games. “I know from my own experience that once you start doing it, you get tense,” she says on ORF. She prefers to focus on skiing and enjoy it. Because she knows she won’t be able to drive forever. “To still be fit and be able to ski well is an honor and a pleasure for me.” (beer)
