Is that enough? Or not? The initiative for a 13th AHV pension not only excites the federal government, but also voters. The turnout will be large when the people decide on Sunday whether retirees will soon receive a 13th AHV pension. It would be a great success for the unions led by their boss Pierre-Yves Maillard (55, SP), who launched the initiative.

This is what you need to know about AHV voting

According to the latest SRG survey, he can still hope: 53 percent of eligible voters still think the introduction of a 13th monthly wage for pensioners is a good idea.

But beware: in order for the pension bonus to actually flow into your wallet, the cantons must also agree to it. In particular, the race for more estates is still open. The research currently shows a yes trend in ten states and a no trend in eight states. 12 of the 23 stands are required. The race will therefore probably be decided in the five cantons that are still open: Zurich, Graubünden, Lucerne, Schaffhausen and Glarus.

Financing still unclear

If the initiative is voted ‘yes’, the seniors will actually receive a thirteenth month’s salary. For a full pension, this currently corresponds to a supplement of at least 1,225 francs to a maximum of 2,450 francs per year for private individuals. Married couples will also receive a maximum of 3,675 francs. This will require another R4.2 billion, and even more as the baby boom generation retires.

That is what the AHV initiatives are all about

There will be a pension showdown at the ballot box on March 3. The voters will then decide on two AHV initiatives: on the one hand, on the unions’ popular initiative for a 13th AHV pension. On the other hand, about the pension initiative of the Young Liberals.

The trade unions’ popular initiative “for a better life in old age” calls for the introduction of a 13th AHV pension. If the answer is yes, a thirteenth monthly salary for seniors will be added to the previous twelve monthly pensions.

The Young Liberals’ pension initiative wants to increase the retirement age. First, it should gradually increase from 65 to 66 years by 2033 and then be linked to life expectancy: per month of additional life expectancy it should increase by 0.8 months – to 67, 68 or more. Automatically.

There will be sufficient money in the AHV fund in the coming years, partly thanks to the higher retirement age for women and the higher VAT, but more money is needed in the medium term. The initiators leave open the question of where this comes from. But there are different ideas, for example about higher wage rates or higher VAT.

Young liberals probably don’t have a chance

Biting less fingernails is the order of the day in the second initiative of the Young Liberals around President Matthias Müller (31). According to the latest SRG survey, only 35 percent agree with this. 63 percent reject it.

The initiative aims to gradually increase the retirement age from 65 to 66 and then link it to life expectancy. For every additional month of life expectancy, it should automatically increase by 0.8 months, but with a maximum of two months per year.
