2024 will be Daniela Ryf’s last year as a triathlete. “It is with mixed feelings that I announce my resignation today,” the statement reads on their homepage. After 24 years, this marks the end of an impressive sporting career.
“After many years of full focus and dedication to this sport, it is time for me to start a new chapter,” said the Solothurn resident. She now wants to concentrate on new projects – and with a clear conscience: “With the tenth World Cup title in 2021 and the world record last year, I have crowned my greatest successes.”
The 36-year-old won the prestigious Ironman in Hawaii four times in a row (2015 to 2018), participated twice in the Olympic Games (2008 and 2012) and celebrated five world titles in the middle distance (Ironman 70.3) and more long distance . Four of them in Hawaii, the fifth in St. George in 2022. Last year she also set the new world record (8:08:21 hours) for the long distance during the Roth Challenge.
‘It is time for something new. “I loved being the best I could be,” she says, looking back on her glorious career. In her farewell season she wants to participate in the new T100 series, the World Championship series of the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) and compete in Miami, London and Las Vegas, among others. In the meantime, Ryf wants to compete again for the Ironman world title in Nice (September 22).
“I will not disappear from the scene,” promises Ryf, “my goal is to inspire people to move and be active.” She is already working on new projects that are mainly about making exercise fun: “There are so many new and exciting things in the future, I’m looking forward to it.”
