After the devastating bobsleigh accident on February 13 at the ice rink in Altenberg (De), seriously injured pusher Sandro Michel (27) fights his way back to life. Now the man from Aargau is speaking out for the first time.
Michel posts photos on Instagram of the hospital and of the helicopter that flew him to the university hospital in Dresden with his life-threatening injuries. Under the title ‘Two weeks and four operations later’, Switzerland’s fastest pusher emotionally describes how close he came to escape with his life in the drama surrounding the backward sliding sled, which left him unconscious in the ice channel and his body was seriously injured. chest and hip area.
Michel writes: “So far it has taken four operations to secure my survival and patch me up somewhat. I think I was very lucky and can/should be lucky to be able to write this message today.”
Pilot Michael Vogt (26), who has been a successful pusher for many years, continues: “The past two weeks were not easy for me. After a serious accident in the Altenberg ice channel, I spent a week and a half in intensive care in Dresden. I am currently back in hospital in Switzerland.”
His last words show how grateful Michel is that he can now devote himself to the long-term rehabilitation and that things are going well again after dark days in Dresden. «I would especially like to thank my doctors, Swiss Sliding, family, girlfriend and my team! You gave me the support I needed and were there for me when I needed you most. I would also like to thank everyone who supported me in any way during this difficult time and was there for me.”
Michel is in hospital, pilot Vogt continues to recover from his severe concussion. The duo would have been the biggest Swiss asset at the current Bobsleigh World Championships in Winterberg. The two pushers Andreas Haas (27, in Simon Friedli’s team) and Dominik Hufschmid (25, in Cédric Follador’s bobsleigh), who were slightly injured in the tragedy in Altenberg, will race in the four-man race at the World Championships this weekend.
