American skier runs out of time in ball duel with Gut-Behrami: pain hinders Shiffrin’s comeback plan

205 points lead, one more race weekend and self-confidence down to the top – Lara Gut-Behrami (32) has all the cards in her own hands in the duel for the overall World Championship against Mikaela Shiffrin (28).

The American will not be at the start of the Kvitfjell speed races this weekend. Shiffrin, who has been taking a break since her fall in Cortina, is planning her comeback for the technical events in Åre (9/10 March). But the road to a comeback is bumpy.

“It was tough today,” the 95-time World Cup winner said on Instagram on Thursday evening. “I’m in pain, which is no surprise. I shouldn’t be pain free right now. That’s just how it is.”

Playing the piano helps

It’s not so much the pain that bothers her, but rather the lack of time. «Åre is not far away anymore. I feel that a little.” She wants to stick to the planned comeback date. “We do our best.” In Shiffrin’s case, that means playing the piano.

“Luckily there is a piano in our apartment complex. This is good for the soul and spirit. This way I can finally practice a song that I’ve wanted to learn for more than a year.” She then gives a sample of “Pretty” by Norwegian pop singer Astrid S.

Shiffrin almost buried her hopes for her sixth major ball a week ago: “I had to accept that the overall rankings are mathematically very far away.” (cmu)
