It’s just a short sentence that Lara Gut-Behrami (32) said two weeks ago. And yet he has it all.

“The solution is that I never go to Ushuaia again,” she says. On the one hand, it is clear that the Ticino native is already preparing for next season – retirement is certainly not an option after this winter.

On the other hand, Gut-Behrami reinvents herself in the autumn of her career; in the future, she will forego ski training in Argentina in the summer. It can be assumed that she will never travel to Chile (La Parva, Valle Nevado) again.

“Nobody has to go to South America if he or she doesn’t want to,” says Alpine director Hans Flatscher. There would be no downside if she stayed in Europe. In fact, Beat Feuz (37), for example, skipped training in South America for years in order to shine at the World Cup. «At her age, Lara just needs a few days in the snow – whether she gets them in South America or Zermatt is not important. In Valais she even has more flexibility, because she can arrive or depart faster depending on the weather.”

The knee caused problems

Gut-Behrami’s decision not to travel to the Argentine Tierra del Fuego in the future is no coincidence. “South America had a hard time with weather safety,” she reflects. The whole thing went so far that Gut-Behrami asked himself fundamental questions. «The conditions were not good, the sun was not shining and it was humid. I was having knee problems and was wondering what else was going on. Later, in Zermatt, the sun shone. That’s when I realized I still wanted to ski.”

The fact is: when it comes to technology, Gut-Behrami has reached a point where everything makes sense. Her giant slalom swing is so stable and fast that she no longer needs excessive training. Even in terms of speed, a few units are sufficient – and it works there too.

She pays even more attention to fitness – including Kondi blocks with her trainer Alejo Hervas in Seville (Sp). “And then it’s about getting through the winter healthy – so far we have always found good solutions,” says Gut-Behrami.
