Since last week it has been clear: Thomas Tuchel (50) has failed as coach of FC Bayern Munich. Eleven months after he took office, the divorce was made official. The former preferred candidate must leave his post in the summer – despite his contract running until June 2025.
This step is the result of an amicable conversation between Tuchel and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen (56). They are also the ones who appear together in front of the team and inform them about it. On January 21, shortly after the decision was announced, they gathered the players in the locker room. “There are no longer discussions every week, everyone knows that,” Tuchel says to his players, according to “Bild”. “We can still achieve something, we have to win.”
Although he lost his job, the coach seemed anything but dejected during his speech. On the contrary. Tuchel is combative and motivates his players for the remaining matches under his charge. He does this by pointing out again that they will have a new coach from the summer. “Everyone can now show their support for the new coach,” he says.
Van Dreesen sounds the same. He emphasizes that everyone is now responsible. For this reason too, there was no early coaching change. You don’t want to give the players an alibi; instead, many of them are playing for their future.
“I have emphatically told the players that their personal interests must take precedence over those of the club and the team,” Dreesen revealed details from his speech to Sport Bild. “The players now have to bring the quality on the pitch that they undoubtedly have and they must feel taken with the honour.”
The players have at least shown an initial reaction. At the weekend they defeated Leipzig and celebrated another victory after three defeats. (beer)
