The euphoria at Rapid Vienna knows no bounds on Sunday evening. City rival Austria Vienna is defeated 3-0 in their home stadium. It is also the first victory after twelve scoreless derbies.

But after the match, the festivities quickly turned ugly. Images now circulating on social media are placing a heavy burden on players and club officials.

Even the director is involved

For example, one video shows how Rapid director Steffen Hofmann (43) uses a megaphone to address his own followers and calls the Austria-Vienna players “sons of bitches”.

And the players don’t really cover themselves with glory after the prestigious victory. After the derby, seasoned professionals like Guido Burgstaller (34, ex-Schalke among others) or former YB champion defender Thorsten Schick (33) were persuaded to sing vulgar insults with the fans against the unloved club from the Vienna district of Favoriten – including sexist expressions .

Among other things, Austrian players are loudly insulted as ‘butt-loving’ – a common, derogatory description for gay men in Austria.

The scandal was followed by a shower of advertisements

The derby win and subsequent scandal will soon be followed by a hangover. The Austrian Bundesliga has now announced that it will report several Rapid Vienna players and officials. “The content of the videos is in no way consistent with the values that football as a whole and the Austrian Football Bundesliga in particular stand for,” an initial statement said.

Rapid will release a statement on the incidents on Monday. Everyone involved regrets their behavior and apologizes. “In this way we want to clearly distance ourselves from any form of discrimination and homophobia and apologize to everyone,” explains Captain Burgstaller, for example.
