Often injured – and now a new transfer rumor: that’s what’s behind the Kobel vortex at Dortmund

Nati goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (26) knows what that feels like. He recently missed the Champions League match against Eindhoven (1:1) and the Bundesliga matchday against Hoffenheim (2:3). For the umpteenth time since he started playing for Dortmund.

“It happens a little too often”

Kobel missed his freshman season due to a ligament injury. In his second year, a torn muscle fiber and back and thigh problems kept him out of action for a total of eleven games. Now that the thigh is tightening again, they expect a downtime of two weeks in Dortmund.

BVB legend Matthias Sammer says the causes must be analyzed. “It happens a little too often with Gregor.” Coach Erdin Terzic chimes in: “The injuries happened too often. And above all, they were always in important phases.” In total, Kobel was out for more than 100 days in his two and a half years at BVB.

Is Kobel making things difficult for himself?

One of the reasons for this is that Kobel trains too much. The Zurich resident, known for his ambition, is working extra shift after extra shift, insiders say. He pushes himself to the limit – and sometimes even beyond. Because he wants to be on top of the world. The 26-year-old undoubtedly has the potential to do that. The player from Zurich was voted team of the season by Kicker this summer. In his 27 league appearances, he kept 11 clean sheets and blocked more than 73 percent of his shots. Thanks to his 196 centimeters, Kobel is the boss in the penalty area – and dominates it like no other in the Bundesliga.

It is therefore no surprise that foreign clubs continue to contact the former GC Junior. According to ‘Équipe’, the star ensemble has shown interest in Kobel and Kobel is already considered as a new successor at Bayern.

But a transfer is quite unrealistic at the moment. Because Kobel signed a contract until 2028 in October. And the bosses in Dortmund know how valuable their goalkeeper is. Injuries or failures.
