Chairman of the National Council, Eric Nussbaumer (r.) traveled to Uri to learn bricklaying from Center National Councilor Simon Stadler.

The tallest Swiss worked up a sweat. National Council President Eric Nussbaumer (63) traveled to Altdorf on Friday. In the capital Uri, the SP politician was trained by the centrist National Councilor Simon Stadler (35).

As a primary school teacher and trained bricklayer, Stadler had the social democrat Nussbaumer stack sand-lime bricks on a construction site for construction company Gamma in Schattdorf UR. Nussbaumer, a trained ‘stromer’, explicitly wanted to learn from his council colleague how to build the wall.

Wall around Switzerland?

Anyone who feared that Euroturbo Nussbaumer would suddenly switch to the SVP camp, which would ideally like to build a wall around Switzerland, can rest assured: the Basel resident was not so quick with the trowel. It could hardly make a major contribution to building a stronghold around our country. During the earlier conversation with Odilo Gamma, the head of Gamma Holding, the SPer was more in his element.

Nussbaumer also found the program easier than building the wall on Friday afternoon. Together with Simon Stadler, he visited the Dätwyler company under the leadership of Dirk Lambrecht. At the Schattdorf factory, CEO Lambrecht and factory manager Reto Burkart showed the two national council members how the Uri company produces almost all capsules for Nespresso. Nussbaumer was happy after his visit to the company because it became clear how important the free movement of people is for the company – and therefore for stable relations with the EU.

So all was well with the world for Eurotrubo Nussbaumer on Friday, even though his shoulder was sore from lifting stones. (pt)
