She has everything it takes to be crowned ski queen of the winter: Lara Gut-Behrami. The 32-year-old leads in three disciplines and in the overall World Cup. More is virtually impossible. There are still ten World Cup races on the calendar – because Gut-Behrami is not doing slaloms, she still has eight to go. “I don’t have to defend anything, but I can win something. “It makes me proud that in mid-February I am still in a position to be able to fight for such big things,” she says.
Gut-Behrami long ago created the perfect environment for this to succeed. She still has a private team, but this is integrated into the Swiss ski structures. The interaction works on both sides. But it is also clear that despite the perfect guidance, the woman from Ticino ultimately has to arrange it herself – no one can help her along the way.
Or is it? At least she never feels alone. Because: it’s not just her parents Gabriella and Pauli who are almost always waiting for her in the finish area. No, her stepdaughters Sofia (born 2009) and Isabel (born 2016) are also with her in the form of a unicorn and a heart – like stickers on the back of her helmet. There are also two hands in the shape of a heart.
Gut-Behrami has a very good relationship with the daughters of her husband Valon Behrami (38). It hurts her even more to have little time for her. ‘It’s hard for my family. Because I come home – whether it’s summer or winter – and I don’t have much time. For example, my stepdaughters know that I can’t go skiing with them because I have to recover,” says Gut-Behrami.
These are exactly the things she wants to do later. When? Gut-Behrami recently indicated that she wants to continue riding until the 2025 World Championships in Saalbach (Austria) – but it is not excluded that she will participate in the 2026 Olympic Games. After her discharge, she will “enjoy the beautiful, normal life,” she explains.
This is music of the future. Gut-Behrami is currently enjoying skiing most of all, despite the personal hardships (“I sacrifice a lot for success – just like the other skiers”). “It’s the best feeling in the world,” she says.
By the way: Gut-Behrami, who lives with her husband in Udine (Italy), has another sticker on her helmet: an Italian flag in the shape of a heart with a lion. The name “Elena” is depicted above it. It stands for former ski racer Elena Fanchini (1985-2023), who died of cancer a year ago.
