A few days after the Africa Cup: Ivorian title hero admitted to hospital with malaria

Christian Kouamé was part of the Ivorian team that won the Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil almost two weeks ago. After days of celebrating, the 26-year-old should soon be available again for his club AC Fiorentina. But he will be out indefinitely.

Because the winger is suffering from malaria. On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, he felt feverish and “generally unwell”, the Serie A club announced. “Kouamé took a test in the morning for a possible malaria infection, which was positive.” He was taken to hospital for treatment and will be further examined there.

Two Malian players are also infected

Kouamé is not the only professional who was diagnosed with malaria around the Africa Cup of Nations. Malian players Yves Bissouma (23) and Moussa Diarra (27) tested positive for the parasitic infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes during the tournament. Both were used despite the disease, trainer Eric Chelle (46) explains: “Someone born in West Africa is used to malaria.” Bissouma showed no problems, Diarra had to do further training because it was his first infection.

It is unclear when Kouamé can return to Fiorentina training. The attacking player was used in four matches in the Ivorians’ victory on home soil, but not in the semi-finals and final. Ivory Coast became the eighth country to win the African Continental Championship at home. Egypt last achieved this in 2006.
