Bayern insider about the coach: ‘Tuchel is humorless and thin-skinned’

Seems desperate: Thomas Tuchel.

Sometimes Thomas Tuchel (50) looks like he is chewing pebbles. The Bayern coach looks so persistently at the surroundings during interviews. Observations that did not go unnoticed by Heiko Niederer. As a reporter, he has been following FC Bayern closely for eight years. And he did not necessarily get to know Thomas Tuchel as a walking joker: “When he started at Bayern, he did his best and tried to appear funnier and more relaxed. Because he knew that from his time at BVB he had a reputation as the muesli man who forbade his players to do anything.” In the beginning, Tuchel made a saying about it. But now he is “humorless and thin-skinned” and feels he often feels ‘unfairly criticized’, says Niederer.

Numbers speak for themselves

The numbers speak for themselves. And to the coach. Tuchel has the worst points average since Jurgen Klinsmann in 2009. And he has lost all his last three games. A feat that even Klinsmann could not achieve. He was released after 29 match days and ultimately VfL Wolfsburg won the trophy. Now everything indicates that no one will be talking about Vizekusen at the end of the season. But then from the number two from Munich. The gap with Leverkusen is eight points.

Niederer speaks about the “current biggest crisis” he has experienced in Säbener Strasse. And that it is inextricably linked to the name Thomas Tuchel. “Everyone is talking about mistakes made in selection planning. But firstly, Tuchel was also involved in the selection planning this summer and secondly, the quality of the team is even better than last season. Because there have been hardly any significant departures and because one of the best strikers in the world, Harry Kane, has joined.”

The biggest problem is that Tuchel has weakened his leading players. Both Thomas Müller and Joshua Kimmich and defense chief Matthijs De Ligt have never felt the coach’s unconditional support. This is now taking its revenge. Niederer still does not believe that Tuchel will be fired this week. “For lack of alternatives.” According to the ‘Bild’ reporter, FC Bayern will hardly hire a firefighter.

Babbel holds players accountable

For Markus Babbel, the old Bayern player who played for the record champions in his youth, it is too easy to blame the coach. After all, he had already warned last summer about what could happen if there was no response to the transfer market: “Tuchel wanted to bring in players, including a Holding Six. Because he noticed shortages in the team. But the transfers were not granted to him.”

Instead of focusing on the coach, Babbel makes the players responsible. “It’s also about the basic virtues. About minimizing individual mistakes, being vigilant. Back to basics,” said the 1996 European champion. Tuchel is the second coach after Julian Nagelsmann who is said to be not good enough. That’s no coincidence. That’s why you have to question the players. “Players who used to be important suddenly no longer perform so well. “It is also a matter of character,” says Babbel.

But the ex-professional agrees with ‘Bild’ reporter Heiko Niedererer on one point. When it comes to Tuchel’s external image. “He has responded rather poorly to the criticism in recent weeks, so he must have more self-confidence,” says Babbel. He has proven that Tuchel can do that. “Rhetorically, it’s actually excellent.”
