Lulu Sun (WTA 181) is in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai. After winning the starting set, the 22-year-old Swiss benefited from the injury-related retirement of her opponent Paula Badosa (WTA 74).
Sun, who enters the tournament in the United Arab Emirates with a wild card, uses her fifth break point against the 26-year-old Spaniard to take a 3-2 lead. She defends her lead and wins the set 6:4.
Badosa, who has been struggling with injuries recently, must therefore undergo treatment. Ultimately, the former world number two gives up in tears.
In the second round, Sun will face Jelena Ostapenko. The ninth-seeded Latvian won her opening match against China’s Wang Xiyu 5:7, 6:2, 6:3. (SDA)
