Following Navalny’s death: Switzerland does not want to summon a Russian ambassador

Anyone who criticizes Russian President Putin lives dangerously. His political opponent Alexei Navalny paid for this with his life. The list of deaths among Kremlin critics is growing. (pictured flowers for Navalny as they were laid around the world)

There are no plans to summon the Russian ambassador to Switzerland, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday.

However, Switzerland is demanding that the circumstances of Alexei Navalny’s death be fully clarified. She therefore calls for a corresponding investigation. “Switzerland has repeatedly denounced the arbitrary detention and ill-treatment of Alexei Navalny in the past,” the EDA spokesperson stressed.

Clearer notes emerged from Berlin: the politically motivated proceedings against Navalny and countless other critics of the Russian government and the inhumane prison conditions showed the brutality of the Russian legal system against dissidents and the means by which President Vladimir Putin restricts freedom of expression in Russia is oppressing, says a Foreign Affairs spokeswoman.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have in turn summoned the chargés d’affaires of the Russian embassies in their countries. It was made clear that responsibility for Navalny’s death lay with the Kremlin.

The Foreign Office in London had already announced on Friday evening that Navalny’s death must be fully and transparently investigated. The ministry “has called on the Russian embassy to make it clear that we hold the Russian authorities fully responsible.” US President Joe Biden, in turn, immediately blamed Putin personally for Navalny’s death.

Putin’s best-known political opponent died in a Russian camp. His death was confirmed by his spokeswoman on Saturday. The Russian penal system had previously informed about the death of Navalny, who had been imprisoned since 2021. Russian authorities have so far denied survivors access to the body.
