Under the motto ‘A Legend goes home’, several hundred people said goodbye to former FCZ striker Raphael Dwamena († 28) at an open coffin on a football field in the northeast of the Ghanaian capital Accra on Friday.
With the sentences “You were more than a husband, you were my confidence, my guide and the source of an irreplaceable love. Rapha, my love, my heart grieves, but I am grateful for the time we had. Sleep well, my Rapha,” Dwamena’s wife Ama said an emotional farewell to “her” Raphael.
Dwamena collapsed on the field during a league match in Albania on November 11, 2023 and died a short time later. It was the family’s wish that the funeral would not take place until mid-February.
At the funeral service, which took place in a close family circle before the funeral, in addition to family and friends, various football personalities were present who Dwamena met on his way from street football player in Ghana to big star. For example, former Inter and AC Bellinzona star Kwadwo Asamoah (35), ex-Inter and AC Milan star Sulley Muntere (39) or former Bundesliga striker Ibrahim Tanko (46, won under Ottmar Hitzfeld at BVB Champions League).
Raphael Dwamena once moved from Austria Lustenau to FCZ as a 21-year-old. At the city club he played a key role in direct promotion and attracted interest from abroad after a successful season. Dwamena was due to move to the Premier League, but the transfer fell through at the last minute due to heart problems. The attacker, born in eastern Ghana, returned to FCZ, excelled there again and moved to Spain. However, abroad and after being diagnosed with a heart defect, Dwamena was never really able to match the brilliant performances from Switzerland.
In 2020 he had a defibrillator inserted. Due to – according to his own statements – erroneous power surges and subsequent collapses in Denmark and Austria, and because of his faith, he had it removed again. Last summer he found happiness again with the Albanian first division club KF Egnatia. On the Adriatic Sea he beats the competition and becomes a goal guarantor – until his failing heart brings him to his knees and he falls asleep forever.
