Last summer, the football world was concerned about Edwin van der Sar (53). The Dutch goalkeeping legend suffered a brain haemorrhage during a holiday in Croatia. Instead of relaxing on the beach, Van der Sar was in critical condition in intensive care for days.
When he was stable, he was transferred home, where he was initially treated in intensive care. After ten days of worry, everything was clear: Van der Sar reported on Instagram and announced that he had been transferred to the normal department.
Six months have passed since this health setback. Now Van der Sar is talking about it. In the podcast “KieftJansenEgmondGijp” he says: “My health is good. I don’t think I’ve suffered any major damage.” But he also admits that since then he has “never spent a day in the office from 9am to 5pm.” Still, he emphasizes: “I’m doing well.”
Although their summer holiday ended badly, Van der Sar and his wife Annemarie recently went on holiday again: to the Caribbean. The two avoided one island: the former Dutch colony of Curaçao. Van der Sar explains the reason for this with a wink. There are “too many Dutch people” there for his taste.
In the spring of 2023, Van der Sar resigned as director of the Dutch record champion Ajax Amsterdam. During his football career he won the Champions League twice (1995 with Ajax and 2008 with Man Utd) and became Dutch and English champion four times respectively. He appeared between the posts 130 times for the national team. (beer)
