“I messed up”: Zug’s Kovar blasts the entire field into his own empty goal

After the goal to make the score 5:3, the residents of Davos hugged each other, cheering and, above all, grinning.

Just under three minutes before the end, EVZ coach Dan Tangnes replaced goalkeeper Luca Hollenstein with a sixth field player. At this moment, Zug has been behind 3-4 against HCD for a few minutes. There would be enough time for another turnaround, but a few seconds later it was 3:5. The residents of Davos are in each other’s arms, cheering – and grinning.

The reason? The official goalscorer Valentin Nussbaumer scores the strangest double. Because EVZ captain Jan Kovar scored – in his own empty penalty area. Unbelievable, but especially bitter for the Czech, who still answered questions after the match. “I messed up,” Kovar says, “and I’m really mad at myself.”

The 33-year-old scores the incredible own goal, the first of his career, from the other side of the rink. “If you asked me, I probably wouldn’t score.” Naturally, Kovar currently wants to pass to his defender Lukas Bengtsson on the blue line. However, the Swede is standing a few meters further to the left and cannot reach the puck. “I can’t turn back time or undo the mistake,” Kovar says dejectedly.

But it is not this mistake that irritates the Zug coach most after the 3-6 defeat. But there are also mistakes in other areas that you need to learn from. Bad timing when implementing changes, for example, “that was sometimes a bit naive, you can expect more from the players,” says Tangnes. Or open the firing lines like before the second goal. And lax defensive behavior like Niklas Hansson in Nussbaumer’s solo to make it 4:3. “We have damaged ourselves with so many mistakes.”
