“At best, I have another year to live.” Former England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson (76) shocked the football world with these words in January. The Swede suffers from terminal pancreatic cancer. Eriksson announced that he would fight as long as he could. The prospect of realizing a lifelong dream will help him.
Eriksson will coach a Liverpool Legends team against a selection of Ajax Amsterdam at Anfield Road on March 23 as part of a charity match. He will form a coaching quartet with John Barnes, Ian Rush and John Aldridge. Eriksson came out as a lifelong Liverpool fan and said he had always dreamed of coaching the Reds during his career.
Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp immediately invited the Swede. “It was the first time I heard about his admiration for Liverpool and that he had been a fan all his life. He is absolutely welcome here. If he wants, he can sit in my chair in my office and take over my work for the day.” Said and done.
Liverpool announced on Tuesday that Eriksson will coach the team around Champions League hero Jerzy Dudek, Martin Skrtel or Djibril Cissé. Ryan Babel, who played for both teams during his career, will play one half each. “Everyone involved with Liverpool FC and the Foundation looks forward to welcoming Sven and his family to Anfield as Liverpool fans and seeing him on the sidelines that day for a fantastic fundraising event.”
The Swede Eriksson had his first coaching assignment in the football world in 1977. Among his greatest successes are three Portuguese championship titles with Benfica Lisbon (1983, 84, 91), winning the Italian championship and winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup (the current Europa League) with Lazio Rome around the turn of the millennium. He left his mark in England as national coach from 2001 to 2006 and was later also active at Manchester City (2007-2008) and Leicester (2010-2011). Now his dream of coaching Liverpool at Anfield will come true.
