There is simply no peace at FCZ: coach Bo Henriksen (49) is leaving the Zurich team with immediate effect and takes over the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club Mainz 05. While the Dane’s departure a week ago would have been anything but a surprise, that is even more the case now. The back and forth of the past ten days is finally over.

Henriksen missed the away match in Yverdon because he suffered from severe flu and a high fever. The Dane follows the 0-3 defeat against the promoted team from his sickbed. There are many indications that Henriksens missed his own farewell match. After the seventh game without a win in a row, the coach is on the verge of elimination – also because it has been unclear, at least publicly, for months whether there will be an extension of the contract, which expires in the summer.

The first turnaround: FCZ surprisingly announced that Henriksen would remain coach until the summer – but not after that. “No common ground could be found. That is why Bo Henriksen has now informed us that he does not want to renew his contract, which expires at the end of the season,” the club wrote in a statement.

“It was a fantastic journey,” Henriksen told the rankings at the press conference before the derby. “In my world, if we finish well, we have accomplished something.” The outgoing coach still seems motivated. The FCZ regrets the coach’s departure. “We would have liked to extend the contract with him,” says sports director Milos Malenovic (39). On the same day, Henriksen was contacted by Mainz.

After the contract situation had been clarified, the big Bo victory was achieved in the derby, the 1-0 against GC is the first FCZ victory since November. “Something like that is possible when there is finally clarity in people’s minds,” says Henriksen about his contract situation. Shouldn’t the FCZ have communicated openly earlier about what the coach’s future looks like? “Yes, two months ago,” was Henriksen’s short answer. For the first time, he expresses his dissatisfaction with the communication about his future.

Mainz 05 separates from coach Jan Siewert (41). The preferred candidate to succeed him is Bo Henriksen.

The FCZ announces Henriksen’s immediate departure. This will be presented in Mainz on Tuesday afternoon. The Dane signs a contract there until 2026 and must lead the penultimate team out of the Bundesliga cellar as quickly as possible. The two former assistant coaches Murat Ural (36) and Umberto Romano (51) will take over from Henriksen until the end of the season and sports director Malenovic will support them.
