When the FCZ announced the contract extension of Bo Henriksen last week, it read like news from an ideal world. And in view of the cheap words for each other, you asked yourself: and why the divorce?
Answer: The relationship between club officials and the coach was not as healthy as they would have us believe. The fact that Henriksen was allowed to stay until the summer despite major differences of opinion about the future was a reward for his services. In the autumn of 2022, the Dane took over a lifeless team that was on the direct path from championship celebrations to the Challenge League and led them back to the top of the table.
The next few weeks would have been a marriage of convenience. Henriksen did not want to resign and the FCZ did not want to fire him (yet). A starting position that is doomed to failure in football. And one in which nothing better could happen to either party than Mainz’s offer. Because the FCZ and Henriksen now get what they have secretly wanted for a long time: divorce. Thanks to the reputation from the Bundesliga, this now happens without loss of face for everyone involved.
And the residents of Mainz? Just like the FCZ, they will be up to their necks in a relegation battle in October 2022. With Henriksen they get a coach that you can only wish for after 16 entertaining months in Switzerland: Do it again, Bo!
