Seven games without a win speaks for itself. FC Zurich has reached a temporary low point in sporting terms. Still leader at the end of November, but now there is a risk of ending up in the relegation group. The FCZ is only four points ahead of seventh place, which is currently occupied by canton rival Winterthur.
The latest shame in Yverdon on Sunday (0:3) shows that the nerves of those involved are on edge. Captain Yanick Brecher (30) publicly railed against Cheick Conde after the red card, which was justified according to referee boss Urs Meier (65). He described the expulsion as “the referee has to go”, “a downright ridiculous red card” and “then we are in the wrong sport”. You should know: Brecher is usually not someone who publicly criticizes harshly, and certainly not someone who puts the referee to shame.
Striking: Since October, since the appointment of sports director Milos Malenovic, only Lausanne-Ouchy has scored fewer points than FC Zürich (14 points from 13 games). No wonder that he also has to deal with annoying questions during the crisis. In a negative highlight of his three-month spell, homegrown Fabian Rohner was shaved during the winter break. The “Züri boy” was sacrificed because it was no longer sporty enough and they wanted to save capital with which they could “possibly bring in a new striker”, as coach Bo Henriksen said two weeks ago. Nothing happened with the “Rohner money.” Nothing that would help the coach or the team in a crisis.
Malenovic must also accept that the future of key players and master makers Adrian Guerrero, Antonio Marchesano and Nikolas Boranijasevic, whose contracts expire in the summer, has not yet been clarified. After a strong preliminary round, the leading trio is suddenly a shadow of itself, also against Yverdon. Because they don’t know what’s going to happen to them in the summer, let alone their coach?
The tiring coaching issue surrounding Henriksen continues to hang over the club like a dark cloud and leads to unrest – in and around the club. After the shame about Yverdon, the FCZ did not take a position at Blick’s request, but went into hiding and is currently discussing whether Henriksen is still the right man. The Dane’s contract expires in the summer anyway.
For Rolf Fringer (67), experienced coach and already on the sidelines at FCZ, it is clear that this topic concerns the team: “The unresolved coaching question plays a role in everything. It’s extremely difficult for the players if they don’t know what’s going to happen in the summer. A new coach would have new ideas, new insights…”
For the 67-year-old, the sports crisis is also a self-made problem that could have been avoided with more skillful communication. “If a sports director is hired during the year who has very good ideas in the medium and long term, but who distances himself from the current philosophy of the coach, with which Henriksen was successful, it will give rise to a lot of discussion. .”
Due to the different opinions of the sports director and coach, Fringer is also certain that the early announced change in club philosophy has brought the FCZ into crisis. In fact: “It was even naive and clumsy. And of course as the team that topped the table with YB.”
While Malenovic wants to rely on young people, if possible those coming from the FCZ Academy, Henriksen has never been known as a promoter of talent. Fringer: “As a coach you are to a certain extent influenced by such fundamental changes. And that does not go unnoticed by the team.”
Given these circumstances, it is highly doubtful whether Henriksen is still the right man to lead Zurich out of the crisis. Moreover, the Dane had always refused to make a commitment to the FCZ when asked in the past. At least: Henriksen still enjoys support in the dressing room. But whether that is enough to continue doing his job remains to be seen.
