“Never rule out possibilities”: Once sent into the desert! FCZ Bueb Djimsiti speaks about a possible return

It has been eight years since Berat Djimsiti (30) had to leave his favorite club FC Zurich overnight. That is a thing of the past, he has long since established himself as Atalanta’s best defender in Serie A. In November he played his 200th game for the club. The 200th in Serie A takes place on Sunday against Lazio.

“Bergamo has become my second home,” Djimsiti told Blick. He lives in the middle of the city with his wife and two children. No matter how much he feels at home in the northern Italian city, he has never lost the connection with his birthplace Zurich. “When you don’t have it anymore, you appreciate what you had even more,” he says.

“The club I am a fan of”

Djimsiti grew up in Zurich-Affoltern. His parents and brothers still live there. When the time suits him, he makes the four-hour drive to visit her. Like at the beginning of this week. But it is not just the family that has never lost sight of the 1.90 meter tall giant. The same applies to the FCZ. “It is the club I am a fan of and the club where I grew up. “I don’t follow it as much as I used to, but I still see the results,” he says over the phone.

Given this constellation, is a return to FCZ conceivable one day? “I never rule out possibilities. But my full focus is at Atalanta at the moment and I still have a contract until 2026.” He will then be 33 years old.

Djimsiti is currently riding a wave of success with the Northern Italians. The former lift club is in fourth place in Serie A. “Reaching the Champions League places is not our goal. But we have the quality to be above that.” They are also represented in both the Coppa Italia (semi-finals) and the Europa League (round of 16). The dream of winning a title is alive.

Just like a title with Atalanta, Djimsiti also misses a European Championship or World Cup participation with Albania. That will change this summer. In 2016 he was left out of the European Championship selection at the last minute. “The fact that I couldn’t be there motivated me.” He will be there in Germany – and as captain. “It is a great pride to be part of this national team and to wear the armband.”
