Frei’s stinky finger scandal: Once an attractive figure, always an attractive figure

Alex Frei’s behavior cannot be glossed over.

As a coach he acts as a role model. The middle finger gesture is an insult and has no place on the sports field – provocation or not. Unfortunately, these are part of football, as Frei knows from his own experience thanks to his illustrious career as a player.

Frei admitted his mistake. The fact that he apologized shows that he understands. This is also why it is not appropriate to break the bar above him due to this misfire. It’s also Frei’s bad luck that he’s Alex Frei. No other footballer of his generation has polarized Switzerland as much as he has, despite 84 caps and a record 42 national team goals. His character and successes at Rennes, Dortmund and FCB made him the most attractive figure in Swiss football. As long as he works in the football world, he will not be able to shake this image.

With his anything but noble gesture, Frei is in good company. Other greats have also lost their cool – even former national and world coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, the gentleman par excellence. That doesn’t make the action any better, but it does show that emotions are not always controllable. And this is what football ultimately thrives on.
