FC St. Gallen won nine home games in a row at the start of the current Super League season. De Espen thus equaled FC Basel’s record. But the series was broken at the tenth attempt and the Eastern Swiss team lost 4-1 to Lugano. And barely three days later the next home defeat followed on Wednesday against a strong Servette. Will St. Gall brighten up the house now?

“I don’t believe that. We also knew that we would not win all home games this season. We are realistic enough,” says defense chief Albert Vallci (29). For the Austrian, the circumstances of the defeat against Lugano played a role – red joke against captain Lukas Görtler (29) after a few minutes – not a big role. “It was a different game against Lugano. It is important that we learn from the two defeats – and learn quickly. We have to stay positive and not get into a negative spiral now.”

Görtler is missing everywhere

Coach Peter Zeidler (61) admits that the events of the past few days have not left the team untouched. “It may be that it was still in the minds of some players. There was already some fear. It was a bit of a shock on Sunday and also all the after-pain that we are not used to. Lukas Görtler and Willem Geubbels were certainly missing from our game.”

Against Servette, Görtler’s absence is particularly noticeable, especially his leadership qualities and mentality. After the 0:1 many players already hung their heads, after the 0:2 in the 26th minute the match was practically decided. A real uprising? No. “After the 0-1, it was not the team I know, but my boys that I know. We couldn’t build up any pressure,” Zeidler said.

Will it all happen in 2024?

Despite the two home defeats, the people of eastern Switzerland have not lost their sense of humor. After Servette’s bankruptcy, fans joke that “everything will now be turned around” in the calendar year 2024. That means winning and losing the home games. The St. Gallen team can prove whether this is the case in the next two away games in Lucerne and Basel. The next home match against Winterthur will not take place until February 17.
