Just in time for the Davis Cup: Tennis star Riedi is really hot

Redemption after the match point: Leandro Riedi is happy with his second joke this year.

There were times when Leandro Riedi (22) was his biggest opponent. It took a revealing conversation with his former coach Yves Allegro, many months of self-discovery and the realization that he would go further if he was ‘kinder’ to himself.

Leandro Riedi is a reflective player. Self-critical and questioning. He may not yet be as advanced as Dominic Stricker (ATP 95), who is the same age and with whom he is often compared. And also a series of injuries that have put him behind in the meantime.

But now Riedi is absolutely ‘on top of his game’, as he describes it. The Zurich resident won the 75cc Challenger tournament in Oeiras (Por) at the beginning of this year – and now he has even completed a double in the 125cc in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve (Bel). “I’m speechless,” says the right-hander, who adds afterwards: “I used to struggle with a few things. But that was an important experience for me.”

Murray was impressed

He is really warming up, just in time for the Davis Cup match against the Netherlands (Friday, Saturday). Thanks to his rocket start, he has already made a jump from ATP position 320 to position 175 this year. Now the goal is to reach the top 100 for the first time.

Riedi feels ready to catch up this year: “I have had a good, serious build-up. I worked on myself at full speed at Swiss Tennis with Kondi coach Beni Linder – and now I feel the impact.”

Andy Murray (36), whom he met in Nottingham (6:7, 5:7), also noticed last year how well Riedi can play tennis. The three-time Grand Slam champion said: “I’ve never seen anyone come back like him. I could not believe it. And at the same time I had the feeling that he could do even better.”

Or in other words – what Murray meant: woe betide your bones if Riedi ever lets go.
